A false alarm activation at Coventry’s Ikea store led to the Croft Road store being evacuated on a busy Friday afternoon. Bosses at the Swedish furniture store are sifting through CCTV footage to identify how the alarm came to be triggered.

Manager Birgit Hartellius said “Our customers’ safety is the most important thing for us here at Ikea. When an incident like this occurs, we put the health and safety of our staff and the safety of our customers foremost.”

Common Causes Of False Alarms

The Hallward Library at the University of Nottingham was evacuated this morning after smoke activated smoke detectors and activated their fire alarm system. The smoke originated in a nearby plant-room near the New Theatre, where contractors were conducting hot work.

A fourth-year student of Film and Television Studies student Tom Watchorn said: “We were asked by Nottingham University staff to leave the seminar we were partaking in and return after half an hour. We were not informed what had happened, but was just told that it was not a fire drill and that in fact a fire engine was on its way.”

University Reopened after All Clear

A spokesperson for the University said “The fire alarm system was activated in a plant room adjacent to the Hallward Library at the University of Nottingham. This was caused by smoke travelling along various underground ducting vents from an underground plant room adjacent to Universities New Theatre. The smoke was a direct result of contractors undertaking hot work maintenance in the University plant room. There was not a fire and there was no damage caused. Once the cause of the activation was located the fire alarm was reset”.

A major fire at the weekend at the Hampton by Hilton Hotel in Corby, Northamptonshire required the attendance of more than fifty firefighters. The blaze at the luxury hotel in Princewood Road is believed to have started in a bin in the laundry area, at around 3:50 pm on Saturday 30^th January.

It took several hours for the blaze to be brought under control by fire crews with specialist equipment after 120 guests and staff were evacuated from the hotel when the alarms sounded. There were no injuries.

Statement from Fire Brigade

David Harding of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said “This was a fire that could have had even more seriously tragic consequences. The Northamptonshire Fire Brigade crews did an excellent job in containing the fire, putting out the fire and in thoroughly searching the hotel to ensure all the hotel guests and hotel staff had safely evacuated. I would like to acknowledge personally the outstanding support provided by our local Northamptonshire police and ambulance colleagues throughout the hotel fire incident.”

Arrests made by Police

Following the incident, two boys and a girl were arrested by Northamptonshire Police on suspicion of arson. They have been released pending further enquiries.

A false activation of the fire alarm system at Luton Airport today led to the evacuation of hundreds of staff and passengers from the main terminal while fire crews attended the scene.

According to a spokesperson for the airport, “the fire alarm activation was, in fact, a false alarm and all passengers and staff are now being allowed back into the terminal. Unfortunately, due to the time it took to investigate the situation there may be some knock-on delays to flights, but our staff will do their utmost to keep disruptions to a minimum.”

Warwickshire Fire Brigade crews from Bidford, Alcester, and Stratford, attended a fire in the laundry room of Wildmoor Spa in Stratford-upon-Avon in the early hours of Friday morning. The building’s automatic fire alarm activated in the leisure and health club after the building was filled with smoke,

The Alcester Road Spa is due to reopen at 7.30am on Saturday morning, following a deep clean that took place through the night.

Wildmoor Spa Update

Marc Mewis, the marketing manager of Wildmoor Spa Leisure and Health Club, said: “The fire broke out in the laundry room, which caused some damage to nearby rooms and corridors. We are currently conducting a deep clean of the building, as the smoke traveled throughout the club. The main issues we are facing is that we have no water supply, gas or electricity. However this should be up and running again by tomorrow morning so we can open to the public again.”

Thanking the crews from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, Mr. Mewis added: “It was lucky that nobody was in the spa building when the fire broke out, and nobody was harmed during the incident. There are certain safety and security features within the laundry room, which did their job. We realise it could have been a lot worse and thank Warwickshire Fire Brigade crews for containing the fire.”

A Warwickshire fire and rescue spokesman said: “On arrival at the scene of the incident our crews were faced with a fire at the rear of the Wildmoor Spa building which was identified as being the laundry room. The fire was rapidly extinguished by firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus. However, the smoke from the fire had filled the whole building. To disperse the smoke, high power fans were used to clear the rooms and corridors of smoke. Fire investigators are on scene talking to Wildmoor Spa staff and looking at the cause of the fire.”

The Stagecoach stand, filled with both home and away supports, had to be evacuated after staff spotted smoke billowing from a flare or smoke grenade just after 3:10 pm. “Anyone found in possession of pyrotechnics such as flares or smoke grenades, or, in fact, any other prohibited items, either at Brunton Park or an away clubs stadium, will be dealt with severely by the club and also the authorities.”

“Both Exeter Football Club and Carlisle Football Club, the match day security and support staff, the fire brigade services and the overwhelming majority of supporters from both clubs should be commended for their quick and positive response to today’s events.

”Unfortunately, the actions of one mindless individual caused significant disruption to the proceedings and put fellow supporters at risk of injury. The taking of flares or smoke grenades to a football match is irresponsible to say the very least. It is something that has to be stamped out.”
