Lincolnshire Fire Brigade Could Start Charging For False Alarms

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service have revealed plans to begin to charge business for attending false alarms, as part of a radical review to cut costs. Their seven point proposal is now under public consultation for an 11 week period from March 1st to May 16th.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Proposals for False Alarms
One of the reforms listed in the document is to ‘Introduce a cost recovery process for attendance to unwanted fire alarm signals’ and is specifically related to commercial and industrial premises with automatic fire alarm systems that repeatedly suffer false activations.
They say “With an increase in the installation of automatic conventional fire alarm systems, heat detectors and smoke detectors in commercial and industrial premises, this has resulted in a rise of false alarms also. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service has been taking numerous steps to address this issue for some years which have helped to reduce the frequency and number of false alarms being attended by our crews. However, the figure for false alarms remains relatively high and, unfortunately, has started to rise again this year. Here at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, we recognise that most companies take the management of their premises and specifically fire safety seriously. It is only those businesses which impose a significant burden to the fire brigade through repeated fire alarm false alarms that these proposals aim to deter.”
Local Consultations
The acting Chief Fire Officer for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, Nick Borrill, said “We are keen to hear the views of the community on our proposed changes for 2016/17 and would encourage as many residents as possible to complete the feedback form which is available on our Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service website. A hard-copy of the feedback form can also be obtained by calling 01522 582222. All feedback forms will be considered in due course before any final decisions on the proposed changes are made.”
